Main objective
Move all four suits to foundations from Ace through King while revealing every face-down tableau card.
Prioritize hidden cards
A move that reveals a card is usually more valuable than a simple foundation move because it creates new options.
Do not build foundations too early
Low cards may still be needed as temporary links in the tableau. Check whether moving one will block a reveal.
Manage empty columns
An empty column normally accepts a King or King-led sequence. Use it for a sequence that exposes additional hidden cards.
Learn the stock order
When the draw order repeats, remembering key upcoming cards prevents wasted moves.
Read the board before touching anything
After the deal, spend ten or fifteen seconds scanning: which columns hide the most face-down cards, whether the Aces and twos are buried deep, and whether any reveal is already available. Most dead games are created in the first ten moves, and those ten seconds avoid a good share of them. Work on the column with the most hidden cards first — it holds the most information you have not yet been able to use.
A working order of priorities
- Moves that reveal a face-down card — almost always first.
- Moves that empty a column — but decide who the empty column is for before you make it.
- Moves that bring a card from the stock into the tableau, ahead of foundation moves.
- Foundation moves — only once you are sure they will not block a later reveal.
When to restart
If the stock cycles through completely without offering a usable move and no reveals remain in the tableau, the deal is usually finished. Roughly one in five standard Klondike deals is unwinnable from the start, so being stuck does not mean you played badly. Rather than repeating the same sequence, restart and spend the attention on the next opening instead.
