Rules and gameplay

You control the paddle on the left and play against the computer on the right. Drag the paddle or use the up and down arrow keys, and the two can be mixed. When the ball gets past you the opponent scores, and the first to seven points wins. Three difficulty levels change how quickly the computer's paddle tracks the ball and how accurately it anticipates, with the easiest deliberately leaving a reaction delay. The scoreboard shows your points and the computer's separately, while a record panel accumulates wins and total games so you can see your long-term form against each setting. A dedicated start button lets you pick a difficulty before serving rather than beginning the instant the page loads. The result screen shows the final score. This recreates the play of one of the earliest commercial video games, with rules simple enough to need no manual.

Tips for higher scores

The key mechanic is that the ball rebounds at different angles depending on where it strikes your paddle. Contact near the centre sends it back flat, which is easy for your opponent to reach; contact near the top or bottom edge sends it away at a sharp angle and forces the opponent to travel. To score, deliberately use the paddle edges to create angle and send the ball away from wherever the computer's paddle currently sits — that is your only means of attack, since you cannot control the ball's speed. On defence do the opposite: meet the ball with the centre of your paddle and return to the middle of the screen immediately after each hit, since the centre is the shortest distance from both extremes and covers the most possible returns, exactly as in tennis or table tennis. A more advanced approach is reading the computer's movement rhythm. At lower difficulties its paddle follows sluggishly, so you can drive the ball to one side to make it travel, then play the next shot the other way and score on the time it needs to come back. Two consecutive shots to the same side do the opposite, since it is already waiting there.

Frequent mistakes

The most common error is standing still after a return and waiting to see where the ball goes, which is always too slow on the harder settings, because the ball is fast and its flight is short so nearly all your reaction time is consumed by the decision. Make returning to centre an unconditional habit and separate it from judgement, which happens while the ball is in flight. The second mistake is hitting everything dead centre; it is the safest contact but the flat return is one the computer almost never misses, and the score stalls into an endless rally. Winning requires creating angle and accepting a little risk. The third is swinging the paddle wildly when behind. Paddle movement takes time, and a large swing frequently leaves you in the wrong place at the moment of contact, so falling behind calls for steadier play and securing the return first. The fourth is forgetting that ball speed accumulates through a rally, so the longer a point runs the faster it moves, and the later stages of a long rally need earlier preparation.

Who it suits

Good for anyone who wants a minimal head-to-head game, and for players with an interest in video game history. Pong was developed by Allan Alcorn for Atari in 1972, originally as a training exercise set by founder Nolan Bushnell for a new employee, and became the first commercially successful arcade game, effectively launching the video game industry. Its prototype cabinet famously broke down during testing in a California bar because the coin box had filled to overflowing, a story that became industry legend. Movement is on one axis so anybody can start immediately, yet the hard difficulty reacts quickly and beating it genuinely requires using angles. A match runs two or three brisk minutes, which suits a spare moment or a run of games across the different difficulties. Your win record is stored on your own device.

Highlights

Three computer difficulties differ in how fast the opposing paddle tracks the ball and how accurately it anticipates, and are chosen before play. The scoreboard shows your points and the computer's separately, with the first to seven taking the match, so you always know how many remain without counting. A record panel accumulates wins and total games, showing your long-term form against each difficulty rather than the impression of a single match. An on-screen note explains that dragging and the arrow keys both work, so nothing has to be discovered by trial. The start button lets you pick a difficulty before serving rather than scrambling after the page loads. The core mechanic — different contact points producing different rebound angles — is clearly visible in the ball's trajectory, so you can observe directly that an edge hit does send the ball away more sharply, which helps considerably when learning angle control. The result screen shows the final score with a play-again option.

Controls and records

On desktop, drag the left paddle with the mouse or steer it with the up and down arrow keys, and the two can be mixed; on a phone, drag the paddle directly with a finger. Movement is on a single vertical axis, so anyone can start immediately with no learning curve. Dragging gives continuous control suited to precise positioning while the arrow keys move at a constant rate for steady repositioning, so each has its advantages and you can switch as the moment requires. Your record is stored in the browser's local storage on your own device, with no account and nothing uploaded to any server; clearing browser data removes it. The language button switches the interface between Traditional Chinese and English instantly, updating every panel label and result string without a page reload. After loading, the game plays offline and needs no continuing connection.
