How to play

Use the arrow keys, WASD, or swipe directly on the board on a phone to slide every tile in the same direction. Two tiles with the same number merge into their sum on contact, and each tile can take part in only one merge per move, so nothing chains within a single slide. After each effective move a new tile appears in a random empty cell, usually a 2 and occasionally a 4. The goal is to reach 2048. The round ends when the board is full with no adjacent tiles left to merge. Reaching 2048 does not force an ending: a congratulation screen appears with two options, continuing for higher numbers or restarting, so chasing 4096 and beyond remains open. Score and the largest tile on the board are both shown live, and your best is stored on your device.

Strategy

The single most important principle is committing to a corner. Choose one corner — the bottom left, say — and use only three of the four directions for the entire game, never pressing the one that would move your largest tile out of it. Anchor the biggest number in the corner and arrange the next largest along the same edge in descending order, which keeps merge opportunities flowing because adjacent numbers always have a chance of matching. In practice most players alternate left and down, using the third direction, up, only when nothing else is legal, and never pressing right. That discipline sounds simple but breaks easily when the board gets tight, and one break is usually the beginning of the end. Fewer distinct values on the board is better, so merge equal pairs promptly to avoid fragmentation — a board holding one each of 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 has its usable space cut into slivers. Bear in mind too that new tiles appear at random, so keep three or four empty cells as a buffer; with fewer than two free, a single unlucky spawn can leave you unable to move.

Common mistakes

The fatal error is pressing the direction that pulls your largest tile out of the corner. Once the biggest number sits in the middle it splits the board in two, neither half merges efficiently, the game usually ends within a few moves, and recovery is close to impossible. The second mistake is swiping wildly in pursuit of a big number quickly, which scatters small tiles everywhere and fills the empty cells. The correct rhythm is to clear small values and keep the board tidy, and the large numbers accumulate on their own. The third is panicking late in the game, when slowing down and checking that each move preserves the corner arrangement matters most — 2048 has no timer, thinking costs nothing, and the pressure is entirely self-imposed. The fourth is assuming a single move can chain merges. Each tile merges only once per move, so a freshly made 8 will not combine with a neighbouring 8 in the same slide, and understanding this is necessary to predict a move's result correctly.

Who it suits

This fits players who enjoy numerical patterns and are willing to work at a strategy. The rules are extremely simple with only four inputs, yet reaching 2048 reliably takes real discipline, which is exactly why it stays interesting: a loss can nearly always be traced to a moment of your own carelessness rather than to luck. The game was written over a single weekend in March 2014 by Gabriele Cirulli, a nineteen-year-old Italian developer, and released as open source; inspired by two earlier games, 1024 and Threes, it drew over four million visits within a week and remains a textbook case of viral web-game spread. It is mathematically interesting too: the largest theoretically attainable tile is 131072, though it demands extraordinary luck. Session length is flexible and you can stop at any point. Everything runs locally in the browser and no progress is uploaded.

Features

The run panel shows your score, all-time best and the largest tile currently on the board — that last figure tells you how many merges still separate you from 2048 even mid-game, which is far more direct than reading the score, since score and largest tile do not correspond linearly. Reaching 2048 brings up a congratulation screen with two choices: continue for higher numbers, or restart. The game therefore does not force an ending at 2048, chasing 4096 remains open, and your score carries on accumulating if you continue. When no move is left, your final score appears with a play-again button. Merges have clear visual feedback so you can see which tiles combined and what they produced, which matters particularly during fast consecutive inputs where board changes are otherwise hard to follow. There is no build-up of animation lag, so rapid successive inputs are never dropped.

Controls and local records

On desktop, use the arrow keys or WASD to choose a direction; on a phone, swipe directly on the board in any of the four directions, with a short flick sufficient to register. The two methods can be mixed. An ineffective move — one where no tile can shift or merge in that direction — spawns no new tile and does not count as a move, so a stray input never adds a tile to an already tight board, a protection that matters greatly in the endgame. Your best score is stored in the browser's local storage on your device alone, with no account and nothing uploaded to any server; clearing browser data removes it. The language button switches the interface between Traditional Chinese and English instantly, updating every panel and prompt without interrupting the game in progress. Once loaded, the game itself plays offline, which suits commutes and places with poor reception.

Rules FAQ

Where does the next tile appear?

After a valid swipe, a new low-value tile appears in a random empty cell.

Does an ineffective swipe create a tile?

No. A tile is generated only when the board actually moves or merges.

Can play continue after 2048?

Yes. Reaching the target does not end the board, so higher tiles and scores remain possible.
